The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to groups of angling colonies. For hundreds of years, the islands were under the control of progressive indigenous domains before being surrendered to the Portuguese and along these lines to the British East India Company when in 1661 King Charles II wedded the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza, and as a major aspect of her settlement Charles got the ports of Tangier and seven islands of Bombay.
