This tragedy opens up old wounds in our minds, bringing forward a similar tragedy just three years ago: James Holmes opening fire in a full movie theater in Aurora, Colorado during the showing of The Dark Knight Rises. Six weeks ago, Dylann Roof took nine lives inside the historic Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. A church! Most of us feel that their sense of safety is more than rattled by this point. While our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims in Lafayette, we have to ask: can we now talk about reforming our gun policies?

I am joined by fellow Legion of Leia contributors, Katherine Sangiorgio and Michael Espinos, to talk about this touchy subject.

Christina: When you guys heard about this the for the first time, what was everyone’s initial reaction to this news?

Katherine: I seriously can’t believe this has happened again. I’m shocked. It’s so devastating. It look me months to feel safe again in a movie theater after the Batman shooting.

Michael: I’m curious about the details that will come later. Were his firearms obtained legally? Were they obtained in a state that has poor gun regulation laws?

Katherine: I’m very curious about that too!

Michael: Every weapon sold is registered with the National Crime Information System and can be tracked to the original point of sale. Many states do not require weapons transfers between two people to be registered. It makes incidents like this all the more scary.

Honestly my first reaction was to say “Not again.” It is becoming all too common for there to be a shooting like this in the news. I am glad the body count is low, but even having that thought makes me realize how scary the world has become.
