SLC, the abbreviated form of School Leaving Certificate is termed to be the IRON GATE in the lives of many students. Students prepare for months to appear in the final examination taking place around Chaitra of Nepali Calender every year and expect to have good numbers in their SLC results with marksheet.
With a total of 8 subjects and total marks of 800, students previously used to get their result in percentage and division. Starting with the SLC result 2072, students will now find their result in grades as the OCE believes the change will have better aspects in shaping the career of students.
Here we list some of the interesting facts about SLC examination in Nepal.
  • Board Toppers in SLC Examination

SLC board toppers were considered similar to celebrities in the past. With the start of the examination in 1991 BS, the examination board announced toppers all over Nepal until 2061. There are no serious reasons over this issue, however, the government believes that every students need to be treated in the same way and naming a student a star in education won’t motivate others.

  • Exam center all run by women

We’ve always been talking about women empowerment and this has been proved in running the SLC examination in Nepal as well. A center in Illam, Adarsha HSS saw all staffs including the superintendent, invigilator, guards and others all being women. This seriously has led to thoughts that women are equally capable of handling different things without the need of males counterparts.
  • Birth During Examination

Pregnant women taking SLC examination always covers newspaper headlines while giving birth makes it a bigger concern. A student named Bimala Chalaune, 15 gave birth to a child in her examination center in Jajarkot. Despite her young age, the child was found to have been healthy.
  • Grades Replacing Percentage

Previously, the government of Nepal marked students result in terms of percentage. However, starting with the SLC result 2071/2072, the system has been changed to grading system and students will now find their result in A+, A, B+, etc. Also, no students will fail the examination.
  • SLC examination center trends

The government always tries to make the SLC examination fair. With increasing trends of cheating and copying answers, several centers within the country initiated a rule for students to write their symbol number in their question papers so that they can’t exchange them.
  • Telecommunication Offers for Students

Every year several communication services run by NT, NCell or so provide special offers for students who appeared the SLC examination. Special discounts in getting a new SIM card, data packages etc are served by telecommunication organizations.
  • Suicide

This has been a serious concern in the education system of Nepal. Many student lose their lives for scoring lower than their expectations. They even have no idea about re-totaling their SLC result and check if there have been any technical mistakes. Some couple of students are always found to end their lives because of their poor SLC result.
  • SLC Preparation in tents

Despite government trying to improve the education standards in the country, several places within the nation are affected by poverty and students don’t have better light facilities to study. Mostly in Jajarkot, around 400 students always live in tents for over 3 months in order to prepare for the SLC examination. Lack of accommodation facilities, poor economic status and lack of proper center to conduct the examination compels them to move far away just to take their examination.
  • More female students in SLC examination 2071/2072

In the course of over 80 years, males students always outnumbered females. However, in the SLC examination 2071/72, 213,710 girls appeared in the examination while 212, 504 males took the examination. This is the first case in the history of SLC examination in Nepal.
  • Waiver in fees

Several students are barred from taking the examination because of their poverty status. Around 248 students in Kanchanput and 50 students in Banke were found to have been denied to get admit cards just because they could not pay their fees. The Prime Minister’s Office has directed the respective departments to waive off the examination fees for such students whose family status is low.
SLC examination is surely a hot topic for students in school in Nepal. With months of preparation and practice, they take their examination hoping of doing better in their career. We wish all the students waiting their SLC result 2071/2072 all the best.
